I am starting a new series today focused on character qualities. Character is definitely a work in progress, isn’t it? We are successful in one area and lacking in another. It can get discouraging sometimes if we only focus on what we aren’t doing rather than where we got it right. In this series, I want to encourage you to see the awesome person that you are…that’s it….no if’s, and’s, or but’s….just you being awesome 🙂
Generosity – it’s definitely a quality where we can be made to feel less than.
You gave $10 to that worthy cause? Someone else gave $50
You donated a backpack full of school supplies to the kids in your community? Your friend gave 10
You went to the homeless shelter to serve a hot meal? The woman down the street does that every week…and takes all 8 of her kids
It can be so easy to feel like our efforts aren’t good enough. But I think that’s because we overlook all the times we are generous in the non-obvious ways. Sure, it’s easy to see cash, backpacks, and trips to the shelter (and those are all important); but generosity, like most character qualities, is not just measured in the times that everyone sees, it’s also measured in the times that are not seen.
Stopped to give a sandwich to the homeless man at the side of the road? You touched his life in a tangible way
Spent the afternoon teaching your child to ride his bike? He’ll never forget it
Gave the young mom in front of you in the grocery line the extra $20 she needed to buy formula? She’ll thank God for you every time she makes a bottle for her baby
Stopped doing the dishes and the laundry to go … oh wait, you’re doing those? when you could be spending that time on yourself? How generous of you 🙂
Read just one more story at bedtime? Kissed that imaginary boo-boo for the hundredth time? Ran that kid to soccer practice at 6 AM…on a Saturday?
You might call that “just being a mother” … I call that being generous. You are generous with your time, generous with your love… and that, my fellow mama, is what generosity is all about.
True generosity is an offering; given freely and out of pure love. No strings attached. No expectations. Time and love are the most valuable possessions you can share. Suze Orman
See? I told you – just you being AWESOME!
Keep Dreaming ~
